UPDATE: Bugatti has officially concluded the production of its legendary W-16 engine with the delivery of the 40th and final Bolide track car, marking a significant milestone in automotive history. This last unit, priced at a staggering €4 million, was personally picked up from the factory in Molsheim, France by an avid collector known for their classic automobiles.
The owner of this exclusive vehicle, which cannot be driven on public roads, also boasts a classic Type 35 – a racing icon from nearly a century ago – and a Veyron Grand Sport, the last of its kind alongside the Bolide. Both cars feature a striking Black Blue and Special Blue Lyonnais exterior paired with a luxurious Lake Blue Alcantara interior.
In an unexpected twist, British engineering firm Lanzante is currently working on a project to convert one of the Bolides into a road-legal version, raising questions about how many of the 40 owners might pursue similar modifications.
Bugatti’s closure of the W-16 chapter is particularly poignant as it continues deliveries of the Mistral, a roadster that will also feature the iconic engine. Limited to 99 units, the Mistral represents the final model to use the W-16 engine introduced two decades ago with the Veyron. Deliveries for this fastest roofless car commenced in February, leading to the eventual retirement of the W-16 engine.
As the W-16 bows out, Bugatti is shifting gears to an all-new V-16 engine for its upcoming Tourbillon, set to replace the Chiron. This new powertrain, developed by Cosworth, will feature a naturally aspirated setup with a larger displacement of 8.4 liters compared to the previous 8.0 liters, and will integrate a hybrid system to comply with evolving emissions regulations.
While the W-16 will soon be a thing of the past, Bugatti is not completely severing ties with its storied legacy. The newly launched Programme Solitaire will focus on creating bespoke one-off models, such as the Brouillard, breathing new life into older platforms similar to how Pagani has rejuvenated the Zonda. This initiative may keep the essence of the Veyron and Chiron alive, creating a timeless appeal in the luxury automotive market.
Stay tuned for further developments as Bugatti moves forward with its next chapter, while enthusiasts and collectors reflect on the monumental legacy of the W-16 engine. This transition marks not just the end of an era, but the beginning of an exciting new phase for one of the world’s most iconic automakers.
