A Minnesota man has transitioned from living in a homeless shelter to securing his own apartment in Grand Forks, marking a significant personal achievement. Troy Miller, originally from Sandstone, Minnesota, moved to Grand Forks after completing a six-month inpatient treatment program in St. Cloud. His aim was to access outpatient treatment, but he found himself at the Northlands Rescue Mission, the city’s primary emergency shelter.
Miller faced numerous challenges upon arriving in Grand Forks. “I don’t know anybody here, and it was really hard to get started,” he admitted. His struggles were compounded by a lack of a strong support system back home, particularly due to issues with drug addiction within his family. After separating from his longtime girlfriend and losing his housing, Miller recognized the need to seek help for himself, a challenge he had long avoided due to his focus on supporting others.
“My daughters have pushed me to focus on my own progress and well-being,” Miller shared. He maintains daily phone conversations with them, which have been a crucial source of motivation in his journey. “They help a lot. They’re all very proud of me,” he said, expressing excitement about the possibility of having them visit his new home.
With assistance from a new friend in Grand Forks, Miller was able to find an apartment. He officially moved in on March 15, 2025. Despite facing additional barriers, such as replacing broken glasses, continuing his medication-assisted treatment, and applying for Social Security benefits, Miller remains hopeful about his future.
“This is the first time I’ve been sober for four months,” Miller noted. “I love being sober.” He is one of approximately 260 individuals the Northlands Rescue Mission has helped secure housing this year, highlighting the ongoing efforts of local organizations to support those in need.
Miller’s story is not just about overcoming homelessness; it illustrates the importance of community and personal determination in the face of adversity. As he looks forward to building a stable life, his journey serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges.
