The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is set to commence significant overnight bridge repair work on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) next week. This initiative is part of a comprehensive $41.3 million project aimed at resurfacing and repairing nearly five miles of the interstate, alongside its ramps and over 20 bridges that connect Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County.
Starting from November 3 and continuing through November 14, 2023, lane closures will be implemented weeknights from 20:00 to 05:00 in both directions between Walnut Street and the Grays Ferry/University Avenue Exit (346B). Additionally, on the weekend of November 7 to November 10, a westbound lane closure will occur from 20:00 on Friday to 05:00 on Monday, affecting traffic between the U.S. 1 North (Roosevelt Boulevard) and Lincoln Drive/Kelly Drive interchanges.
Motorists are advised that significant congestion and travel delays are anticipated during these overnight hours. PennDOT urges drivers to plan accordingly and allow extra time when navigating through the work zones. All scheduled work remains contingent on weather conditions.
This ongoing project encompasses essential structural repairs, resurfacing efforts, and safety upgrades designed to enhance ride quality and prolong the service life of one of the region’s busiest highways.
