Emotional Journey Unfolds in ‘Four Minus Three’ at Berlin Festival

The world premiere of Four Minus Three (original title: Vier Minus Drei) is set to captivate audiences at the Berlin International Film Festival, specifically within the prestigious Panorama section. Directed by Austrian filmmaker Adrian Goiginger, the film is based on a true story that navigates the complex themes of family, death, grief, and hope, intertwined with the unexpected presence of clowns.

The narrative centers around Barbara, portrayed by Valerie Pachner, and her partner Heli, played by Robert Stadlober. As professional clowns, they lead a vibrant, joy-filled life with their two children until tragedy strikes. Following a devastating car accident that claims the lives of Heli and the children, Barbara’s world is shattered. The film explores her struggle to find light amid unbearable loss as she grapples with her belief in humor and humanity.

“In the face of unspeakable loss, her belief in humor, hope, and humanity is put to the ultimate test,”

the film’s synopsis reveals. It poses the question: can Barbara rediscover her way back to life and laughter after such profound sorrow?

Joining Pachner and Stadlober in the cast are Stefanie Reinsperger, Hanno Koffler, and Ronald Zehrfeld. The screenplay, crafted by Senad Halilbašić, is adapted from the bestselling novel by Barbara Pachl-Eberhart. The film is produced by 2010 Entertainment from Austria and Giganten Film from Germany, with Goiginger at the helm as both director and producer alongside Peter Wildling, Gerrit Klein, Martin Pfeil, and David Stöllinger.

Director’s Vision and Emotional Depth

Goiginger’s initial reaction to the story was one of hesitation. “I first read the synopsis of Four Minus Three at a time when my second child had just been born. My initial reaction was that the story of a woman who loses her husband and children in one fell swoop was too intense for me,” he explained in a director’s statement. However, his perspective shifted upon reading Halilbašić’s screenplay draft, which emphasized themes of hope and life after tragedy rather than solely focusing on the sorrow of loss.

Throughout the filming process, Goiginger noted the challenging emotional landscape for the cast and crew. He expressed admiration for Pachner’s commitment to her role, stating, “I’ve rarely seen anyone commit to a role the way Valerie Pachner does: 100 percent emotionally invested in every take, regardless of the consequences.” He also praised Stadlober for infusing humor and depth into his character.

Distribution and Exclusive Preview

Four Minus Three has secured distribution in Germany through Alamode Film, while Polyfilm will handle its release in Austria. As anticipation builds ahead of its festival debut, The Hollywood Reporter is set to unveil an exclusive clip from the film, showcasing Pachner’s character as she reflects on cherished memories with her family.

This poignant film promises to be a compelling exploration of resilience in the face of profound loss, inviting audiences to engage with both the light and shadow that life presents. As viewers prepare for its premiere, Four Minus Three stands as a testament to the enduring power of hope and the human spirit.
