URGENT UPDATE: A young suspect, estimated to be between 13 and 14 years old, has allegedly stolen a family SUV with four children inside, leading to a dramatic crash in Philadelphia late Thursday night. The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. in the Oxford Circle neighborhood, where the children’s mother left her Honda CR-V running as she briefly stepped into the King Laundromat on Castor Avenue.
Police report that when the mother returned, the vehicle was gone. Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police Department stated, “This appears to be a crime of opportunity. The suspect likely saw the vehicle with the engine running and took advantage of it.” This alarming incident highlights the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, even for a short period.
According to investigators, the stolen SUV was driven approximately half a mile south on Castor Avenue before the young driver lost control and side-swiped a parked van while attempting to turn onto Comly Street. Witnesses reported seeing the crash and described the suspect’s young age.
After the accident, the suspect reportedly realized there were children in the back seat and fled the scene on foot. Fortunately, authorities have confirmed that the four children were unharmed and have been safely reunited with their mother.
“It only takes a split second for something like this to happen,” Chief Inspector Small added, emphasizing the importance of vigilance among parents.
As police continue their search for the young thief, they urge the community to come forward with any information that could aid in the investigation. The alarming nature of this theft has sparked discussions on child safety and vehicle security in urban areas.
This incident serves as a stark reminder for parents to never leave children unattended in vehicles, even momentarily. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
