Volkswagen Unveils T-Roc R: Powerful SUV Launches This Month

UPDATE: Volkswagen just announced the launch of its highly anticipated T-Roc R, set to deliver impressive performance starting this month. This SUV, essentially a Golf in crossover format, has already made waves in Europe, becoming the fourth best-selling model in the region through October, with 170,931 units sold this year alone.

The T-Roc R is generating excitement as customer deliveries commence, but that’s not all. Volkswagen is teasing a more powerful version, the hot R model, slated for release in 2027. While its design remains under wraps due to camouflage, early images reveal key features that hint at its performance enhancements.

Notably, the T-Roc R will feature an Akrapovič quad-exhaust system, indicating it’s anything but ordinary. It also boasts 20-inch forged wheels equipped with wider tires, significantly improving grip over the original model. Autocritica’s exclusive close-up photos showcase aggressive bumpers and upgraded brakes, but the star attraction is undoubtedly the engine.

Under the hood, the T-Roc R will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine, producing 328 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, identical to the latest Golf R. However, this model introduces a revolutionary mild-hybrid setup, utilizing a 48-volt system to enhance efficiency and comply with upcoming Euro 7 regulations, though it is not expected to exceed the Golf R’s power output.

As for the hot Golf R itself, it remains uncertain if it will also transition to a mild-hybrid engine. Speculation suggests that the current Mk8 could be the last Golf featuring a combustion engine, potentially staying on sale until 2035. Given the stricter emissions regulations, VW is likely to explore electrification options for the Golf R.

Unfortunately for fans of manual transmission, the six-speed option will not return. The T-Roc R and the Golf R will both utilize a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, paired exclusively with 4Motion all-wheel drive technology.

It’s important to note that the T-Roc R will not be available in the U.S., similar to the acclaimed Golf R wagon. Meanwhile, the R division is preparing to bid farewell to the Touareg R, with production set to cease in 2026. Looking to the future, Volkswagen is also hinting at an all-electric R model, having previewed a combustion-free Polo GTI and teasing plans for an electric-only R vehicle.

As Volkswagen gears up for this exciting launch, enthusiasts and potential buyers are eagerly awaiting more details. The T-Roc R promises to be a thrilling addition to VW’s lineup, blending performance and efficiency in a compact crossover.
