Victory Christian Shocks St. Johns with 3-1 Upset in Semifinals

BREAKING: In a stunning upset, first-time semifinalists Victory Christian defeated 15-time champions St. Johns Country Day with a score of 3-1 in the FHSAA Class 1A Girls Soccer Championships on Friday afternoon. The match took place at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex, marking a historic moment for the Polk County team.

Victory Christian, ranked No. 6 in the state, faced a daunting challenge against the top-ranked St. Johns, but defied expectations with a remarkable comeback. After an early goal from St. Johns’ Adisienne Taylor in the 11th minute, the Storm rallied with a series of powerful plays that culminated in back-to-back goals from freshman Kinley Hunter just 17 minutes apart.

Hunter’s first goal not only equalized the score but shifted the momentum in favor of Victory Christian. Senior Sylvia Rodriguez, who celebrated her 18th birthday during the match, played a crucial role by providing the assist. “We were ready. We believed we could win,” Rodriguez stated, emphasizing the team’s resilience after conceding the opening goal.

Victory Christian maintained their confidence as they executed a strategic offensive, culminating in a game-winner from Hunter after a free kick that hit the crossbar. “We had to lock down our defense and keep everything out,” said senior co-captain Hayden Fullwood. The Storm’s final goal came from Olivia Enechkwu, who secured her twelfth of the season, sealing the victory in the last two minutes.

The historic win is not only a triumph for the team but also a significant upset in the landscape of Florida girls soccer. It marks the largest upset for a Polk County team since Lakeland Christian ended St. Johns’ state title streak in 2023.

Victory Christian (14-7) will now advance to the championship match against No. 2 Canterbury, scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday. Canterbury reached the finals after a convincing 4-0 victory over Berean Christian.

Head coach Grace Kelly, who is currently on maternity leave, expressed her pride in the players’ determination. “They showed incredible mental toughness today against some of the best players,” she stated, underscoring the grit and teamwork that led to this remarkable victory.

As the excitement builds for the championship, all eyes will be on Victory Christian to see if they can secure an even greater achievement. The stage is set, and the Storm are ready to take on Canterbury in what promises to be an exhilarating finale to the season.
