UPDATE: Aahna Mattis, a standout softball player from Valwood, has officially signed a letter of intent with Truett-McConnell University, marking a pivotal moment in her athletic career. The signing took place on December 2, 2025, surrounded by teammates and family members who celebrated this life-changing achievement with her.
Mattis expressed her overwhelming emotions during the ceremony, stating, “I’m really proud of what I’ve done so far… I just am so happy that I get to play softball at the next level and just continue my dreams.” Her mother, Janet Mattner, could not hold back tears of joy, showcasing the significance of this milestone for their family.
At just 290 miles from her hometown, Truett-McConnell impressed Mattis with its welcoming community and beautiful scenery. “The environment, overall… it’s just a great community to be a part of,” she said, emphasizing her excitement about joining the Bears.
During her time with the Valwood Valiants, Mattis showcased her incredible skills with a batting average of .351, accumulating 20 hits, 15 runs, and 21 RBIs. Her standout performances included two impressive games where she registered three hits and five RBIs in a 9-0 victory over Echols County.
Valwood head softball coach Courtney Carter praised Mattis for her hard work and leadership, saying, “It means a lot… the impact she’s had on Valwood softball over the past four or five years is incredible.” Carter highlighted Mattis’ dedication as a key factor that sets her apart, adding, “If she keeps it as she goes there… she’ll be very successful.”
Mattis leaves Valwood with a career batting average of .312, having played 51 games and contributing significantly with 44 hits, 35 RBIs, and 24 walks. She is set to join a Bears program that finished with a 29-15 record in 2025, signaling a promising future ahead.
Reflecting on her journey, Mattis emphasized the shared values and faith she found at Truett-McConnell, stating, “We all share the same faith… it’s just a really good thing to be able to play together.”
Carter, a four-time All-American and Hall of Fame inductee, has been a pivotal influence on Mattis, who credited her coach for her personal and athletic development. “Playing for Coach Carter has been one of the best things in my life,” Mattis remarked, highlighting the profound impact of her mentorship.
