UPDATE: Daniel W. O’Hara, affectionately known as “Flair,” tragically passed away in a car accident on October 22, 2025. The sudden loss of the 77-year-old has left his community in shock, highlighting the impact of a vibrant life cut short.
O’Hara, born on September 14, 1948, in Superior, Wisconsin, spent his formative years in various locations, including Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He graduated from Northwestern High School in 1966 and later attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS), where he was a proud member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and a key swimmer on the state-ranked team. He completed his degree in 1970 just before being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as a neuropsychiatric technician in Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam.
After returning home, O’Hara furthered his education at UWS, earning a master’s degree in School Psychology. He dedicated his career to education, working as a school psychologist in the Duluth area, including at Wreshall and Carlton school districts, and also coaching cross-country running and skiing. At the time of his death, he was actively involved as a realtor with North Point Realty.
O’Hara was a passionate adventurer, known for his love of hang-gliding, which he took up in the 1970s. He was a member of the Skyline Skydogs and spent over ten summers commercial salmon fishing in Alaska. A dedicated athlete, he participated in numerous marathons, including the Paavo Nurmi and Grandma’s marathons, and completed over 30 Birkebeiner races. His enthusiasm for life was evident as he embraced both summer and winter sports.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Stein (Cookie), his brother, Kevin O’Hara, and several other family members. His legacy includes a deep affection for animals, prompting the family to request donations to local animal shelters in lieu of flowers.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for November 8, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the Lakeside Community Center, located at 3196 Poplar River Road off Highway 13 in Maple, Wisconsin. The Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
