Urgent Help for Struggling Families as Operation Holiday Launches

UPDATE: The holiday season is proving to be a challenging time for single mother Whitney, who just completed her studies in criminal justice at Montgomery Community College. Although she should be celebrating her achievements, Whitney is facing financial hardship as she took a leave of absence from her job to focus on her education, leaving her and her four children struggling to make ends meet.

Whitney, 33, has dedicated herself to improving her life and that of her children, aged 5 to 11. “I know that my degree will lead to a good career down the road, but right now we are really struggling,” she shared, highlighting her determination despite the obstacles she faces. With the festive season approaching, she is relying on community support to provide a merry Christmas for her family.

The Operation Holiday program, which began in 1991 in Pottstown, has stepped up to assist families like Whitney’s. This year, the program is celebrating its 35th anniversary and has expanded its reach to support families across Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties. With a mission to ensure every child receives gifts and that families have food on the table, Operation Holiday is crucial during this festive season.

Last year, Operation Holiday raised nearly $85,000, providing gift cards to 366 children and grocery gift cards to 189 families. This year, they have partnered with 21 agencies, referring 199 families with 403 children in need of gifts and food. Whitney expressed her gratitude, saying, “The generosity of others is a beautiful thing,” while receiving assistance from Orion Communities, a nonprofit that offers crucial resources for families in need.

Every contribution made to Operation Holiday is tax-deductible, and the program operates with zero overhead, ensuring that all funds directly support local families. Gift cards for food are provided to families so they can purchase essentials for holiday meals and gifts.
