Urgent: Cape Cod Trading Card Thefts Surge Amid Suspected Bandit

UPDATE: Cape Cod’s gaming community is reeling as a series of high-value trading card thefts escalates, with the latest incident occurring at Vanguard Tabletop Gaming in Hyannis last night, December 1. Law enforcement is on high alert as authorities suspect a “Pokémon Card Bandit” linked to previous burglaries targeting local stores.

Just days after a staggering $36,000 heist at Darkwater Games in Mashpee, the Hyannis break-in mirrors that theft closely, raising alarms among collectors and shop owners. Surveillance footage reveals a suspect with a medium to heavy build, wearing an olive-green beanie, pants, and a navy-blue sweatshirt, who focused solely on high-end cards, ignoring less valuable items.

Authorities report that Barnstable Police responded to the scene late last night after receiving reports of a break-in involving a shattered glass rear sliding door. Multiple patrol units and a K9 team were deployed, and a police drone surveyed the area for the suspect, who may have had a getaway vehicle nearby.

The Mashpee burglary, which took place on Black Friday, resulted in the loss of valuable Pokémon, Lorcana, and Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. The community rallied behind Darkwater Games, expressing support through social media after the store shared a list of stolen cards, including serial numbers. “We didn’t have the day we planned, but we still had a heck of a good day with all of you!” the store posted on Facebook, showcasing the resilience of the gaming community.

As police continue to investigate, they urge local shops and collectors to remain vigilant for anyone attempting to sell high-end trading cards at suspiciously low prices. “Collectors are advised to be cautious and report any suspicious activity,” stated a representative from Hyannis News.

Mashpee Police are actively pursuing leads related to the Black Friday incident, while Barnstable Police work to gather more details from the Hyannis burglary. The community is encouraged to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the suspect. Those with relevant information can contact Mashpee Police Detective Donnis at 508-539-1480 ext. 7237 or the Barnstable Police Department at 508-775-0387.

The string of thefts highlights a growing concern for trading card enthusiasts and local businesses in Cape Cod. As this story develops, authorities are urging everyone to keep an eye out for their valuable collectibles and report any suspicious sales.
