Urgent Appeal: Help Us Reach 2,500 Sports Balls for Kids by Dec. 28

UPDATE: The clock is ticking as the Let’s Play Ball Drive urgently approaches its target of 2,500 new sports balls for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach, with a deadline set for December 28. With just days remaining, community leaders are calling for immediate support to make this goal a reality.

Don Rodriguez, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach, emphasized the dire need for contributions, stating, “We’re very close to reaching our goal and unlocking the magic gift from our angel donor.” This anonymous donor has pledged $10,000 but will only release the funds if the community matches it, bringing the total to a crucial $20,000.

The annual campaign aims to provide 5,000 sports balls combined for both the Long Beach and L.A. Harbor clubs, and currently, 2,047 balls have been collected in Long Beach, while over 1,500 balls have been gathered in the Daily Breeze area. “We appreciate all the help we’ve received so far,” Rodriguez added, urging the community to rally for the kids.

This initiative, sponsored by the Press-Telegram and Daily Breeze, is more than just a sports drive; it’s a lifeline for local youth, promoting health and teamwork while keeping them engaged in positive activities. Sports have a profound impact on children, helping to build their confidence and keep them off the streets.

To incentivize donations, participating Big 5 Sporting Goods locations are offering a 25% discount on any regularly priced sports balls purchased for donation, excluding golf and tennis balls. Rodriguez encourages donors to take advantage of this opportunity and help kids in need.

You can contribute in two ways: by dropping off new sports balls at designated locations or by making an online donation. Major drop-off sites include the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach’s main office at 3635 Long Beach Blvd., and various Big 5 locations in Long Beach. Additional drop-off points are available at Phil Trani’s Restaurant and First Bank branches throughout the area.

As the holidays approach, every donation, no matter the size, makes a significant difference in the lives of these children. “Every donation helps our kids and makes a real difference in their day,” Rodriguez remarked.

Donors can also support the campaign by purchasing items from the Long Beach clubs’ Amazon wish list at bgclublb.org/Joy. For more information, reach out to Kari Cho, Vice President of Marketing and Development, at [email protected].

Community members are urged to act quickly—time is running out to make an impact. This is a chance to transform lives and ensure that every child has access to sports balls this holiday season. Join the effort now to help us reach our goal before the deadline on December 28.
