UPDATE: A 17-foot balsam fir from Turck’s Trees has just been delivered to the State Capitol in St. Paul as this year’s official Capitol Christmas tree. The tree, which will be decorated on Monday, represents a proud Minnesota tradition and marks the first time Turck’s Trees has been chosen for this honor.
The majestic tree was transported to the Capitol on Tuesday and has already been set up in the rotunda by Capitol staff. This year’s selection comes after Turck’s Trees won the grand champion title at the 2024 Minnesota State Fair, outshining over 120 competing entries from members of the Minnesota Christmas Tree Association.
“This honor is particularly special for us,” said Joan Turck, co-owner of the family-operated farm. “It’s a long-standing Minnesota tradition, and we’re thrilled to be part of it.”
The balsam fir is renowned for its rich green needles, natural conical shape, and exceptional needle retention—making it a favorite among Christmas tree lovers. Notably, it is also celebrated as the most fragrant of all Christmas tree varieties. This year’s tree will remain on public display beyond Christmas, inviting visitors to experience its beauty and aroma throughout the holiday season.
Founded in 1875, Turck’s Trees has been a family business for generations. The farm has approximately 100 acres dedicated to Christmas and landscape trees, with the fourth, fifth, and sixth generations of the Turck family actively involved in operations.
Last year, Turck’s Trees also provided trees for the Governor’s Residence in St. Paul, solidifying its reputation as a premier supplier of holiday trees in Minnesota.
As the decorations go up on this stunning balsam fir, Minnesota residents and visitors alike are encouraged to stop by the Capitol to take in this symbol of holiday spirit and community pride.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates as the tree is adorned and the festive season progresses.
