Tennessee Cleans Up 77,000 Pounds of Litter in No Trash November

UPDATE: Tennessee has achieved a remarkable milestone in its 5th Annual No Trash November campaign, removing over 77,000 pounds of litter from roads and waterways. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced this significant accomplishment as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental cleanliness.

With a goal of 75,000 pounds, 2,470 volunteers participated in 205 cleanup events throughout the state, collecting 3,596 bags of trash. Governor Bill Lee proclaimed November as No Trash November Month, underscoring the importance of community involvement in keeping Tennessee pristine.

Leading the charge, Keep Knoxville Beautiful emerged as the top performer, clearing an impressive 13,971 pounds of litter. TDOT is recognizing these dedicated volunteers for their hard work and commitment to environmental stewardship.

The No Trash November initiative goes beyond just cleanup efforts; it also includes educational programs aimed at promoting year-round litter prevention. Engaging a wide array of community groups—including Keep Tennessee Beautiful affiliates, Litter Grant recipients, and youth organizations like Girl Scouts and Scouts BSA—this campaign fosters a culture of cleanliness.

TDOT reports that young volunteers can earn rewards for their participation. For instance, the Rocco the Raccoon patch is awarded after completing three cleanup projects, motivating continued involvement among youth.

The Trash Masters Rewards program also incentivizes participants aged 13 and older. By attending cleanup events or completing preventive quizzes, individuals can earn points redeemable for discounts at local businesses or exclusive merchandise.
