UPDATE: The Swampscott Select Board has just announced a crucial decision to allocate $140,000 for urgent repairs to the town’s fish pier, following a meeting on Wednesday night. This development aims to enhance safety for community members who rely on this vital infrastructure.
During the meeting, Community and Economic Development Director Marzie Galazka revealed that a report from Smith Marine last year highlighted the need for improvements. “Last year, Town Meeting allocated $150,000 to make upgrades to the pier,” Galazka stated, emphasizing the necessity of addressing safety concerns.
In a bid to expedite the repairs, the town awarded $10,000 from the initial allocation to replace surveillance cameras at the fish house. The remaining $140,000 will now focus on essential pier repairs, including decking and pillar support, as well as fuel-line maintenance. Galazka confirmed that a bid was opened in August, with only one contractor, White Marine, Inc., submitting a proposal.
Select Board Vice Chair Doug Thompson inquired about the extent of the repairs. Member Danielle Leonard, liaison to the Harbor and Waterfront Advisory Committee, reassured that while the repairs are necessary, none are classified as critical. “We didn’t have any red (critical) items,” she noted, indicating that the pier is not in immediate danger of collapse.
Galazka highlighted the importance of these repairs for the safety of community members. “We wanted to try and address them now that we have the funds,” she said, underlining the urgency to act before potential environmental issues escalate.
Chair Katie Phelan noted that while the idea of a new $5 million pier had been dismissed by the community, environmental groups are warning that the current structure may face significant challenges in the coming years. “It will face potential storm surges in the next 10 years that could potentially demolish it,” Phelan cautioned.
The Select Board is expected to receive further updates from Galazka later this week as discussions continue with the contractor. The community is urged to stay tuned for developments regarding this vital project.
This repair initiative is not just about infrastructure; it reflects the town’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. As the project moves forward, residents are encouraged to share their thoughts and concerns.
