BREAKING: Bloomington South wrestler Nick Russell has just made headlines by securing a seventh place medal in the 106-pound division at the state wrestling championships. This significant achievement marks his first trip to state and solidifies his position as the Herald-Times Boys Wrestler of the Year. At just a sophomore, Russell becomes the first underclassman to earn this prestigious honor in over a decade, continuing a remarkable legacy for the Panthers.

Russell’s impressive season record stands at 33 wins and 9 losses, bringing his total career wins to 54. Notably, six of his nine losses were against competitors who ultimately placed ahead of him at state, including two defeats against the undefeated state champion. His determination shined through as he avenged two of those losses during the postseason, achieving crucial victories with pins in the regional final and the semi-state third-place match.

“About halfway through the season, you could tell he was starting to get confidence in himself,” said South’s coach Mike Runyon. “The last two weeks, it showed in the room. He was realizing, ‘Hey, I can get this done.’ It’s a great thing to see happen.”

Russell’s journey this season included winning his first sectional title, dominating the regional competition, and placing third at semi-state—each step vital to his medal-winning performance at state.
