South San Francisco Police Identify Man Shot in Confrontation

UPDATE: Authorities have identified the man shot by police during a confrontation in South San Francisco as 28-year-old Luis Francisco-Manzo. The incident occurred on December 8, 2023, and he is currently recovering at a local hospital.

Police confirmed that the shooting took place around 5:10 a.m. after officers were called to the 900 block of Sandra Court by Francisco-Manzo’s mother. She reported that her son had taken drugs and expressed suicidal thoughts while armed with a knife.

In a swift response, officers Brendan Hart and Martin Corona, who have eight years and four-and-a-half years of experience with the department respectively, arrived on the scene. Body-worn camera footage shows Francisco-Manzo complying initially, but he brandished a knife when he approached the officers.

Officers ordered him to drop the weapon and deployed Tasers, which failed to subdue him. As he advanced toward the officers with the knife raised, both Hart and Corona opened fire, striking him. He collapsed immediately, and officers provided medical aid until firefighters arrived to transport him to the hospital, where he was initially reported in critical condition.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is actively investigating the shooting, focusing on the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
