URGENT UPDATE: A Sharon Hill man was arrested on serious gun and drug charges following a traffic stop in Folcroft earlier today. Mark Baxter, age 30, is now facing multiple charges after his suspicious behavior caught the attention of an officer at around 10 a.m.
Authorities confirm that the incident began when Folcroft Officer Nicholas Matty observed a blue Toyota Prius stopping at a green traffic light, obstructing the flow of vehicles. When the driver, identified as Baxter, exited the car and disposed of an item in a trash can, the officer took action, showcasing the “outstanding vigilance” of the Folcroft Police Department, according to Cpl. Thomas Kesser.
Upon approaching Baxter’s vehicle, Officer Matty detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana. Baxter initially denied having any marijuana in the car, claiming the smell was from smoking earlier. However, he was uncooperative and refused to exit the vehicle, prompting police to issue commands.
As Baxter was patted down, he reportedly indicated there might be marijuana in his belongings, leading officers to discover a clear bag containing 44 oxycodone pills and other suspected narcotics, including MDMA.
The situation escalated when Officer Matty searched the nearby trash can, uncovering a pink-and-silver SCCY 9 mm handgun, loaded with one round and an additional 10 rounds in the magazine. Police also recovered $423 in cash and additional marijuana inside the Prius.
Baxter was charged with possession of a firearm prohibited, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and several other drug-related offenses. He was unable to post the 10% bail on a $125,000 bond and was remanded to county jail. A preliminary hearing is set for October 28 before Magisterial District Judge Steven A. Sandone. No defense attorney has been listed in court records.
This incident highlights the critical role of proactive policing in maintaining community safety. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.
