URGENT UPDATE: The City of San Antonio has just launched an interactive High-Injury Network (HIN) Dashboard to tackle critical road safety issues, as confirmed by the Transportation Department on October 12, 2023. This innovative tool aims to illuminate high-risk areas for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, helping residents navigate their neighborhoods more safely.
Residents can now access the HIN Dashboard, which visually maps locations of severe and fatal crashes across the city. Users can zoom in on their local streets and routes to identify dangerous spots, giving them an unprecedented understanding of where traffic incidents frequently occur. This initiative is a key part of the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and is linked to the ‘Keep Crossings SAfe’ campaign.
Catherine “Cat” Hernandez, the Transportation Director, emphasized the significance of this dashboard, stating,
“As we continue our work to build safer streets, this dashboard offers residents an unprecedented level of visibility into where the most serious crashes occur.”
Key features of the HIN Dashboard include interactive mapping that allows residents to filter data by Council Districts or local neighborhoods. Additionally, the dashboard categorizes crash severity, pinpointing whether incidents primarily impact pedestrians, cyclists, or drivers. This transparency is designed to foster communication between city officials and the community, making vital safety data accessible and understandable.
The dashboard aligns with San Antonio’s broader Vision Zero mission, which seeks to eliminate all traffic deaths and severe injuries through strategic, data-driven approaches. Hernandez further explained,
“This tool goes hand in hand with our safety campaign outreach, helping residents see firsthand why efforts like ‘Keep Crossings SAfe’ matter, and how small behavior changes can save lives in San Antonio.”
As traffic incidents continue to pose severe risks, the HIN Dashboard represents a proactive step toward enhancing community safety. San Antonio residents are encouraged to utilize this tool and engage in safer practices on the roads.
Stay tuned for further updates as the city continues to roll out initiatives aimed at reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities.
