UPDATE: The Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) volleyball team is on fire, heading to the NJCAA Division III National Tournament for the second consecutive year as the fourth seed. The Yellowjackets face Brookdale Community College at 3 p.m. on November 13 at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
This year, the stakes are higher: RCTC boasts a strong 22-8 overall record compared to last year’s 15-14. The team’s momentum surged after sweeping both regional semifinal and championship matches, positioning them as a formidable contender.
Head coach Jen Nerison expressed confidence, stating, “We’re seeded fourth this year, and I believe we can at least land in fourth, but why not aim for the top?” Her optimism is echoed by the players, who have built a strong emotional and competitive bond on and off the court.
Key players include freshman right side hitter Lily Holtan, leading the team with 427 kills, and freshman setter Carmen Nerison, who has achieved 1,024 set assists this season. Their chemistry is palpable, as many team members have previously played together in club volleyball.
“We have a very skilled group of girls,” said Holtan. “Our emotional connection helps us bounce back from tough times, and that will be crucial at nationals.” The team’s resilience was tested just before regionals, but they regrouped and advanced with determination.
Returning captains, sophomore libero Jayda Bednarek and defensive specialist Reagan Hoff, are pivotal in guiding the young team, which consists of 11 freshmen. Bednarek leads the team with 569 digs, showcasing her defensive prowess.
As they prepare for their first match, the Yellowjackets are fueled by memories of their last national appearance, where they finished 10th as the 13th seed. “It’s a different feeling this year,” Nerison noted, emphasizing the team’s growth. “We’re coming in expecting to compete at a higher level.”
RCTC last claimed the national title in 2015, and with their current trajectory, fans are hopeful for a thrilling tournament run. The team’s chemistry, talent, and determination make them a force to reckon with.
As excitement builds, fans are encouraged to support the Yellowjackets in their pursuit of national glory. Stay tuned for updates as RCTC aims to make their mark in Cedar Rapids!
