URGENT UPDATE: A police sergeant was injured early Friday morning when a suspected drunk driver collided with an Antioch police vehicle. The incident occurred just before 2 a.m. at the intersection of A Street and W. 10th Street, as officers were managing traffic due to an earlier crash.
Authorities confirm that the suspect, a 31-year-old man, was driving under the influence and speeding at the time of the crash. Both the sergeant and the driver were transported to a local hospital but have since been released and are expected to recover.
According to Sgt. Joe Njoroge of the Antioch Police Department, officers were on-site investigating a prior incident when the driver crashed into the driver’s side of the patrol vehicle. “We were there to ensure safety and traffic control when this unfortunate event took place,” Njoroge stated.
Fire personnel from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District assisted in extracting both individuals from their vehicles. Fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported, but the events highlight the dangers of impaired driving.
As investigations proceed, local authorities urge the community to stay vigilant and report any suspected cases of driving under the influence. The Antioch Police Department continues to prioritize public safety and will take necessary actions against impaired driving.
