Police Fatally Shoot Man in Queens After Box Cutter Charge

UPDATE: A police shooting in Queens has left a man dead after he allegedly charged at officers with a box cutter early this morning. The incident occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on December 21, 2023, at a residential building located at 1170 Nameoke St. in Far Rockaway.

Officers from the 101st Precinct were responding to a 911 call regarding a domestic altercation between a father and his son. Upon arrival, police met with the father and his wife but could not locate the 29-year-old son initially.

As the officers and the parents exited the apartment, they spotted the son in the hallway, wielding a box cutter. According to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, the officers issued multiple commands for him to drop the weapon. Rivera stated, “The male did not comply with the demands to drop the weapon.”

As the situation escalated, the father moved behind the officers for safety. The son then charged towards them with the box cutter, prompting one officer to deploy a Taser. However, a second officer opened fire, striking the suspect.

Emergency medical services were summoned, and officers performed CPR until EMS arrived. The man was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officers involved were evaluated at a local hospital but reported no injuries.

“This incident once again demonstrates the dangers that our police officers face every day,” Rivera emphasized. “A routine call can quickly escalate into an extremely dangerous situation.”

The NYPD Force Investigation Division is currently investigating the shooting, with experts examining the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
