This year’s inductees include two legendary former coaches, a standout athlete, and two dedicated community volunteers, marking a momentous occasion in Orono sports history. The event is generating excitement among alumni and local sports fans eager to celebrate these influential figures.

Former boys basketball coaches Bob Cimbollek and John Giffin are among the honorees. Cimbollek, who coached at Orono from 1963 to 1969, boasts an impressive record of 106 wins and 32 losses, leading the team to state championships in 1967 and 1969. He has also made a significant impact in the coaching realm, securing a total of five state titles throughout his career.

Giffin took over the basketball program from Cimbollek and achieved remarkable success, including a perfect 22-0 season in 1973. His coaching accolades include being named statewide coach of the year twice, further solidifying his legacy in Orono athletics.

Joining them is Jeff Mateja, a three-sport athlete known for his prowess in soccer and track, who graduated in 1997. Mateja not only set multiple school records in hurdles but also captained all three of his teams, contributing to their conference and state victories. He continued his athletic career at Bentley University, showcasing the long-term impact of Orono’s sports programs.

In a special contributor category, community members Diann and Billy Libby will also be honored for their unwavering support of Orono athletics.
