UPDATE: Old Dominion University has clinched a thrilling 24-10 victory over the University of South Florida (USF) in the StaffDNA Cure Bowl held at Camping World Stadium on January 2, 2024. This decisive win marks ODU’s first ten-win season since 2016, elevating their record to 10-3 overall and 6-2 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Freshman quarterback Quinn Henicle, making only his second career start, displayed remarkable resilience after an early fumble. Despite a rocky beginning, Henicle led the Monarchs to a commanding performance, scoring two critical touchdowns and amassing 227 total yards of offense.
The game kicked off with USF taking an early lead after a fumble recovery by safety Fred Gaskin. The Bulls capitalized on this turnover, with kicker Nico Gramatica successfully converting a 28-yard field goal to make it 3-0. However, ODU quickly retaliated; Henicle orchestrated a ten-play drive culminating in a 6-yard touchdown run, marking his first rushing touchdown of the season.
USF responded with a touchdown of their own, as quarterback Gaston Moore connected with receiver Jeremiah Koger for a 31-yard scoring pass, regaining the lead at 10-7 just before halftime. Moore stepped in for starting quarterback Byrum Brown, who opted out of the game.
But the Monarchs were unyielding. After a critical interception by defensive back Brandon Crutchfield, Old Dominion capitalized on another turnover to score again, this time with a 22-yard touchdown run by running back Trequan Jones, pushing their lead to 14-10.
Despite a missed field goal attempt by Gramatica, the Bulls continued to push. ODU’s defense held strong, forcing another turnover which allowed them to extend their lead with a 24-yard field goal, making it 17-10. Henicle then sealed the victory with a spectacular 51-yard touchdown run late in the game, ensuring the Monarchs’ triumph.
The victory comes as a significant moment for Old Dominion, highlighting their resurgence in collegiate football. The last time USF won a game in Orlando was back in 2015, marking a troubling streak of losses in Central Florida.
As the college football season wraps up, all eyes are now on the future for both teams. ODU’s victory not only solidifies their place in history but also sets the stage for next season as they aim to build on this momentum.
