UPDATE: Niwot senior Hunter Robbie has just been named the Longmont Times-Call boys cross country runner of the year, following a stellar season that culminated in historic victories for his team. The Cougars dominated the state meet in Colorado Springs, securing their third consecutive championship with a record-breaking score of 28 points, the lowest in the state’s 5A classification history.
In an even more impressive feat, the Cougars triumphed at the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) in Portland, Oregon, winning the national championship with just 61 points, the fewest ever recorded in the event’s 21-year history. Robbie, finishing just 1.2 seconds behind teammate Quinn Sullivan, secured fifth place, while Sullivan finished sixth.
“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy at NXN because there were many great teams,” Robbie stated. “But our team just tried harder and worked harder this year, knowing we had a chance at being one of the best teams in history.”
Robbie’s individual accomplishments are equally remarkable. This season, he notched victories at three major meets, including the prestigious Centaurus Bernie Gay Invitational with 25 schools, the St. Vrain Invite featuring 51 teams, and the Granite Peak League Championships. He finished as runner-up in three additional competitions, including the regionals, where he was bested by teammate Rocco Culpepper.
“Hunter just loves to compete,” said Niwot coach Kelly Christensen. “He’s always eager to race, even in JV competitions. His passion for competition fuels him.” Christensen’s high praise has reached Duke University, which is excited about Robbie’s potential as he prepares to join their program next year.
“I think they’re an up-and-coming program, and I wanted to be part of a team that improves every year,” Robbie commented, drawing parallels to his journey at Niwot.
The urgency of Robbie’s achievements and the team’s historic performance resonate throughout the community, making this season one for the record books. As the Cougars celebrate their victories, the spotlight now turns to Robbie’s future at Duke, where he aims to make an impact just as he did at Niwot.
Stay tuned for updates on Robbie’s collegiate career and the continued success of the Niwot Cougars as they strive for further excellence in the world of cross country.
