New Year’s Eve Safety Tips: Plan Ahead to Celebrate Safely

URGENT UPDATE: As New Year’s Eve approaches, officials in Fresno, California, are urging partygoers to prioritize safety while celebrating. Authorities emphasize the importance of planning ahead to avoid risks associated with one of the busiest nights of the year.

New Year’s Eve is notorious for attracting crowds to bars, and officials warn that it can lead to dangerous situations. “I like to call nights like New Year’s Eve ‘amateur hour,’” said bar owner Lewis Everk, highlighting that many choose to celebrate without regular safety practices.

To ensure a safe celebration, officials recommend notifying someone about your plans. “If you ever feel unsafe, just let someone know,” Everk added, stressing the importance of looking out for one another.

In a proactive measure, California state law now mandates that bars be equipped with Naloxone, commonly known as NarCan, and drink testing kits for potential spiking. While this is a positive step, authorities advise against relying solely on these measures.

Clovis Police Sergeant Sean O’Brien emphasized, “Also, let people know where you’re going, when you plan to arrive, and when you plan to leave.” He encourages partygoers to go out with trusted friends who will watch over them throughout the night.

Another essential tip is to secure your ride home well in advance. If you’re utilizing rideshare services, O’Brien stresses the importance of verifying driver information. “All rideshare services have safety precautions in place to confirm who the driver is, the vehicle’s color, and license plate. Make sure to double-check that information,” he said.

Bar owners like Everk are committed to preventing drunk driving by responsibly cutting off patrons who have had too much to drink. “I’d rather upset someone by cutting them off than know they didn’t make it home,” he stated, underscoring the critical role that establishments play in public safety.

As the countdown to midnight begins, remember to prioritize your safety and that of others. Follow these tips to ensure a fun and secure New Year’s Eve, and make it a night to remember for all the right reasons.
