New Lenox Library Launches Urgent Care Cabinet with Narcan

UPDATE: The New Lenox Public Library has just launched a groundbreaking care cabinet offering essential items and Narcan, providing immediate support for community members in need. Opened on December 4, 2023, this innovative initiative allows individuals to access crucial resources without any questions asked, addressing urgent community needs during a time of significant federal program cuts.

The care cabinet, located in the library lobby, includes shower products, deodorant, toothpaste, gloves, chap stick, first-aid supplies, socks, and Narcan—an essential medication used to reverse opioid overdoses. Library Executive Director Michelle Krooswyk emphasized the library’s role as a pillar of support, stating, “There are people from all walks of life that come here, and we want to be welcoming to you and support you.”

This initiative, funded by a $1,000 grant from the Friends of The New Lenox Library, was initially scheduled for a January 2026 opening. However, the timeline was moved up due to rising needs among lower-income residents following cuts to federal food benefits earlier in November.

Melissa Seaberg, the library’s administrative coordinator, highlighted the significance of the care cabinet, noting that it allows people to receive assistance without judgment. “Sometimes asking for help can be a sensitive topic,” Seaberg remarked, reflecting the cabinet’s immediate impact as many items, including lip balm and deodorant, have already been depleted.

The library has partnered with the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization to ensure Narcan is available to those who may need it. Krooswyk noted that the organization reached out to provide Narcan packages at no cost. She encouraged community members to attend training sessions on how to use Narcan, reinforcing its life-saving potential.

Community support has been overwhelming, with many residents donating items directly to the cabinet. However, library staff are regulating donations to maintain hygiene standards and ensure items are packaged appropriately. Monetary donations can be made through the library’s website or via an Amazon wish list.

The care cabinet’s concept was inspired by a similar initiative at the Rock Island Public Library, showcasing the collaborative spirit among libraries. “We just like to find and share ways to support the community,” Krooswyk explained.

In addition to the care cabinet, the library offers various non-literary resources including tech support for older adults, a warm space for unhoused residents, job-seeking assistance, and gathering spaces for families and students.

The New Lenox Public Library, which celebrated a successful referendum in 2020 to sustain its tax rates, aims to expand its services further. The care cabinet will remain available indefinitely during library hours. The library will also launch a new cafe space in January and a winter reading program, marking its 25th anniversary next year.

Krooswyk expressed pride in the library’s community engagement and plans for future renovations, emphasizing the library’s ongoing commitment to being a vital resource. As the care cabinet opens its doors, the New Lenox Public Library stands ready to support residents in critical times, making a significant impact in the community.
