UPDATE: Marin natives Sophia Sabella and Pablo Feldman have just received a Grammy nomination for their work on the music video for Doechii’s hit song “Anxiety.” The nomination, announced earlier today, places them in the running for Best Music Video at the Grammy Awards on February 1, 2024.
This nomination comes on the heels of the music video’s explosive success, having garnered a staggering 58 million views since its release on April 18. The project dives deep into Doechii’s personal struggles with mental health, showcasing not only her powerful performance but also the creative vision of director James Mackel.
Sabella and Feldman, who grew up in Mill Valley, faced the unique challenges of producing the music video, including constructing a house set on a sound stage and coordinating a street shutdown for a vibrant dance sequence involving 85 dancers. “We had such specific timing; it’s amazing how much each detail needed to flow successfully,” Sabella remarked, reflecting on the complexity of the production.
The couple’s journey into the music video realm began through their collaboration with producer Jolene Mendes. Their production company, More Avenue, was officially formed about a year ago, allowing them to channel their passion for storytelling into projects like “Anxiety.” “We work so well together, we should just start a company,” Feldman said about their evolution as filmmakers.
“We did not expect all of this,” Feldman expressed, emphasizing the honor of having their work recognized at the Grammys. “As producers, you don’t get your name in the light that much, and it’s pretty amazing to be included on this stage with so many other incredible nominees.”
The emotional impact of the nomination was palpable, especially given the couple’s history with music videos during the iconic MTV era. “Sophia and I have always loved music videos since we were kids,” Feldman noted, highlighting the significance of this achievement in their careers.
With the Grammys fast approaching, the excitement is palpable for Sabella, Feldman, and the entire team behind “Anxiety.” As they prepare for the ceremony, the focus will be on celebrating their hard work and the creative community that made this project a reality.
The recognition from Grammy voters not only amplifies their individual achievements but also shines a light on the collaborative effort involved in music video production. As the countdown to the Grammy Awards continues, all eyes will be on these talented filmmakers and their groundbreaking work in the industry.
