LSU Scientists Launch Upgraded Microscope to Revolutionize Geology

URGENT UPDATE: LSU researchers have just unveiled a groundbreaking upgrade to their scanning electron microscope, enhancing its capabilities for geological research. Brandon Shuck and Erini Poulaki, both researchers in the Geology Department at LSU, successfully secured $26,000 in funding for the advanced AZtec software. This software upgrade significantly improves the microscope’s ability to collect critical data through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). These enhancements allow researchers to assess the internal structure of minerals and their elemental compositions with unprecedented accuracy.

“We are thrilled to be able to utilize this upgraded SEM for our research,” Poulaki stated. “Previously, the device was primarily used by engineers focusing on homogenous metals. Now, we can analyze the intricate and diverse mineral compositions found in rocks, which is vital for our studies.”

The upgraded software elevates the microscope from a niche tool to a versatile instrument capable of handling daily research activities. The enhanced abilities mean that the team can now create detailed maps of heterogeneous mineral samples, a task that previously required tedious manual work and significant time investment.
