URGENT UPDATE: A Livonia baker is making a significant impact this holiday season by launching a free food pantry to assist families affected by recent changes to SNAP benefits. Hassan Makki, owner of Sweet 220 Bakery, opened the pantry inside his shop, aiming to support struggling families in Metro Detroit.
Makki’s initiative comes as many families face difficulties due to reduced SNAP assistance. “One of the most beautiful things about our culture is the hospitality and giving back,” Makki stated. “I was raised by my grandparents and my parents to give back, even if we grew up with very little.”
The pantry is stocked with essential items including rice, beans, pasta, peanut butter, oats, canned goods, and fresh produce, all provided at no cost to visitors. “Everything over here is free,” Makki confirmed to those utilizing the pantry.
Local residents like Ramia Elhussaini and Jason Glaze have praised the pantry’s impact. “With everything that’s going on with the SNAP benefits, this is just a great opportunity for people to come in and grab things they may need,” said Teresa Morris, a visitor.
This generous act is not Makki’s first. Earlier in 2023, he delivered treats to line workers and first responders during a power outage crisis. Now, he is further extending his generosity by adopting three families this holiday season, providing them with an array of desserts to brighten their spirits.
The stories of families in need have moved Makki to tears. One nomination detailed a single mother who has taken in her brother’s children after his tragic passing. “I’m still grieving, and it would be nice to have a sweet treat to brighten my mood,” the mother shared. “The kids just want a smile on their face.”
Makki’s compassion stems from his own experiences with hardship. “I’ve been through family loss, and it’s hard to read these stories, especially when you know you have food at home,” he reflected.
The food pantry operates year-round and is reliant on community support for expansion. Families seeking holiday treats can submit nominations through Sweet 220 Bakery’s Instagram account, @sweet220.
This initiative highlights the urgent need for community support during challenging times. As families navigate the effects of reduced SNAP benefits, Makki’s pantry offers a beacon of hope and kindness in Livonia.
