UPDATE: LEGO Group and Ford Motor Company are set to unveil a new Model T LEGO set, officially launching on Monday, October 23, 2023. This collaboration celebrates the revolutionary vehicle that transformed transportation over a century ago.
The highly anticipated 1,000+ piece set pays homage to the historic Model T, an invention that played a pivotal role in making cars accessible to the masses. This project, which began a year ago, showcases the dedication of both companies to honor automotive history.
Ted Ryan, Ford’s archives and brand manager, is a key figure behind the project. As a passionate LEGO enthusiast, Ryan expressed his excitement about contributing to a set that honors his dual loves: LEGOs and Ford. “We always, always build with the kids. I just said, ‘heck, I’m gonna start getting them myself,’” Ryan stated, reflecting on his enthusiasm for building with his family.
The design process was meticulous. Ryan traveled to Billund, Denmark, the headquarters of LEGO, where he collaborated closely with designers to ensure historical accuracy. “The questions and the level of details that the designer was looking for made me know that she was really invested in making the project exactly as perfect as it could be,” he remarked.
This set is unlike previous collaborations between LEGO and Ford. It features authentic elements such as classic tires, a folding cloth top, and a gas tank accurately placed under the main seat. “The wheels were white because the tire manufacturers hadn’t switched to dyeing or creating black wheels,” Ryan explained, emphasizing the set’s attention to detail.
The LEGO Icons Team, responsible for bringing culturally significant items to life as LEGO sets, chose the Model T due to its profound impact on the world. “It’s putting the Model T back up on a pedestal that it rightly belongs to be on,” Ryan concluded.
