URGENT UPDATE: Kapa’a residents must prepare for significant traffic disruptions as multiple road and lane closures are set to begin from December 15 to December 17. The Kauai County Department of Public Works has announced these closures due to essential geotechnical subsurface exploration, which aims to enhance traffic signal systems and install a new utility pole.
The disruptions will commence on December 15, with a single-lane closure on Kukui Street, affecting the left turn lane just west of the Kūhiō Highway intersection. On December 16, a section of the east side of Kukui Street at the same highway junction will be entirely closed. The work will culminate on December 17 with the closure of the south end of Niu Street, adjacent to Kūhiō Highway.
These closures are scheduled to take place daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weather permitting. While the county acknowledges that these modifications will lead to temporary inconveniences, officials assure residents and business owners that access to properties along the affected routes will remain uninterrupted.
Municipal authorities are urging the public to pay close attention to all posted signage and directions from flaggers in the work zones. “Access to properties will be provided. Please observe and obey all traffic controls, posted signs, and flaggers,” states the county’s official website.
Commuters are strongly advised to allow for extra travel time and prepare for potential detours and delays throughout this period. The impact on daily commutes could be significant, making it essential for residents to plan accordingly.
