Joseph Angelo Legueri Passes Away at 81, Leaves Lasting Legacy

BREAKING NEWS: Joseph Angelo Legueri, beloved teacher and family man, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025, at the age of 81. His journey through Alzheimer’s did not dampen his spirit, leaving behind a legacy filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable memories.

Legueri, who began his teaching career at Duluth Cathedral in 1967, enriched the lives of countless students until his retirement in 2001. Known for his quick wit, many recall his signature phrase, “The heck you say,” which became a hallmark of his classroom.

In a romantic story that spanned over five decades, Legueri met his wife, Shirley, in 1962 while driving the after-school activity bus. The couple celebrated 58 years of marriage, during which they built a home in the woods and cherished adventures with their two children, Tony and Gina Haggard.

Joe was also a dedicated grandfather to Thomas, Cooper, and Kelsie, teaching them the value of silliness and unconditional love. His family recounts how he devoted hours to ensuring his grandchildren felt cherished and understood.

The only son of Dorothy and Angelo Legueri of Nashwauk, Joe was known for his playful spirit, often teasing his four sisters: Patti Williams, Jeannie Sunnarborg, Margie Legueri, and Marianne Cable. A man of many talents, he built the home he raised his family in and had a passion for tinkering with cars, especially his prized 1948 Studebaker.

In a departure from traditional memorials, Legueri’s family has invited friends to celebrate his life in a unique way. They encourage loved ones to “raise a glass, tell a story that may or may not be true, and laugh a little too loudly,” reflecting the joy with which Joe lived his life.

As the community mourns this great loss, tributes pour in, highlighting the profound impact Legueri had on his students and family alike. His humor and warmth will be missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire laughter and joy.

Stay tuned for more updates as the community comes together to honor the remarkable life of Joseph Angelo Legueri.
