BREAKING: Joan M. Hakun, aged 84, of Allentown, has sadly passed away on November 9, 2025, at the Luther Crest Healthcare Center in South Whitehall Township. She was the devoted wife of George Hakun III for an incredible 63 years, leaving behind a legacy of love and family.
Joan, originally from Reading, was not only a homemaker but also an accomplished Registered Nurse, with educational roots at Reading High School, the Reading Hospital School of Nursing, and Kutztown University. Her commitment to service extended beyond her profession, as she was a valued member and former Lector at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Allentown.
Her family remembers her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, cherishing her passion for travel, reading, and classical music. Joan is survived by her husband, George, their son Mark G. Hakun (Maurann) of Gambrills, MD, and grandchildren Monica Burnett (Jeff) of Layton, UT, and Marcella Hakun of Gambrills, MD. She also leaves behind a great-granddaughter, Emma Burnett, and daughter-in-law Cathy Hakun of Woodbine, MD, along with grandchildren Steven and Patrick Hakun.
A Mass of Christian Burial is set for Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 11 A.M. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, located at 1040 Flexer Ave., Allentown, PA 18103. Prior to the Mass, a calling hour will be held from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. in the church.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home in Allentown. Condolences can be offered online at www.jsburkholder.com. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joan’s memory may be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
