URGENT UPDATE: Advocacy specialist Jeremy Daffern will lead a transformative program titled “Listening Differently” on Tuesday, October 28, 2023, from 6 PM to 8 PM at Wayne State College. The event, set to take place in the Kanter Student Center’s Frey Conference Suite, is free and open to the public, with doors opening at 5:30 PM and food provided.
Daffern, who represents the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, aims to enlighten attendees about the challenges faced by those who are deaf or hard of hearing. “Being deaf or hard of hearing is an experience I can never completely understand,” Daffern stated. He emphasizes the importance of “walking side by side” with individuals who navigate a world designed primarily for hearing individuals.
This engaging program will not only spotlight Daffern’s personal journey but will also facilitate critical conversations about resilience and hope in a complex society. Joined by ASL interpreter Meghann Cassidy, he will share insights drawn from his experiences as a Gallaudet University alumnus and his international work in Latin America.
The event will conclude with an interactive segment where attendees will “listen differently” to performances by members of the Wayne State Department of Music. This unique approach aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse communication styles.
Sponsored by Wayne State public and global health honors students, Wayne State’s service-learning program, and the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the event promises to be an eye-opening experience for all participants.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Attendees will gain valuable resources and tools to better engage with their neighbors who may have different hearing experiences. This is a vital opportunity for community members to become more inclusive and supportive.
