James Donald “Jim” Early Passes Away at 87; Community Mourns

BREAKING NEWS: James Donald “Jim” Early, a beloved figure in the Waterford community, has passed away at the age of 87 on December 18, 2025. His family confirmed the news just moments ago, marking the end of a life dedicated to service, education, and community involvement.

Born on July 3 in Albany, New York, Jim always celebrated his birthday on the Fourth of July, a testament to his vibrant spirit. He was the third of five children in the family of the late Joseph A. Early, Esq. and Loretto Powers Early. Jim was preceded in death by his siblings Joseph A. Early, C. Eileen Early, and Loretto Therese Early, leaving behind his loving sister, Elizabeth M. Early, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim is survived by his four devoted daughters, Grace E. Boss, Jane F. Early, Margaret H. Warner, and Kathleen L. Early, as well as his grandchildren, who he cherished deeply. Tragically, his daughter Mary Ellen Early passed away just six months earlier, on June 26, 2025.

Jim’s educational journey began at St. John the Evangelist Grammar School and continued at St. Joseph’s High School, where he graduated in 1955. After a brief stint studying for the priesthood, he turned his focus to a long and impactful career in education. He served as a Guidance Counselor at St. Mary’s Academy and later taught English Composition at Hudson Valley Community College until his retirement in December 1999.

In addition to his educational contributions, Jim was a dedicated community servant. He held the position of Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford for a decade and was a Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker. His commitment to the community extended to his 57 years with the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department, where he was known for his dedication and camaraderie.

Jim was also a passionate musician, serving as an organist at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy and participating in the Knights of Columbus and the Waterford Lions Club. His life was characterized by kindness, friendship, and a profound sense of faith.

In his later years, Jim received compassionate care at the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Troy, where he was surrounded by love until his passing.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, followed by a mass at noon at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to visit the funeral home on Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Early family encourages donations in Jim’s memory to the Hospice Community or the Waterford Fire Department, reflecting his lifelong commitment to service.
