UPDATE: Indiana is taking swift action to support future educators with the newly opened Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship. High school seniors and college students pursuing teaching careers can now apply for this scholarship, offering $10,000 per year for up to four years, provided they commit to teaching in Indiana schools after graduation.
Just announced by State Representatives Jack Jordan (R-Bremen) and Jake Teshka (R-North Liberty), this initiative aims to attract top talent in education. “We want the very best teachers growing the minds of young Hoosiers, and that means keeping them in the state,” Jordan stated, highlighting Indiana’s commitment to retaining local talent.
The scholarship is specifically designed for high-achieving students who rank in the top 20% of their class or have exceptional standardized test scores. Interested applicants for the 2026-2027 academic year must submit their applications by the January 31 deadline through the Indiana Commission for Higher Education’s website.
This scholarship program, which began in 2016, saw a significant enhancement in 2023. The scholarship amount increased from $7,500 to $10,000, while the previous cap limiting annual recipients to 200 has been removed. Last year, nearly 300 educators received awards out of over 1,000 applicants, showcasing its competitive nature.
Teshka, who serves on the House Education Committee, stressed the importance of this initiative: “This scholarship helps identify and award some of our brightest and most talented students, encouraging them to invest their talents in Indiana and in educating the next generation.” His remarks underscore the urgency of attracting skilled educators to support Indiana’s educational landscape.
With the scholarship application deadline quickly approaching, potential applicants are encouraged to act now. This funding opportunity not only eases the financial burden of pursuing a teaching degree but also plays a vital role in shaping the future of education in Indiana.
Stay tuned for further developments on this initiative as the state moves to bolster its educational workforce!
