UPDATE: Hermantown junior Gabe Swenson netted a crucial goal with under six minutes remaining, leading his team to a 4-2 victory over Cloquet-Esko-Carlton (CEC) on December 19, 2023. The game took place at the Northwoods Federal Credit Union Arena, keeping Hermantown undefeated at 8-0-2 this season.
Swenson’s decisive moment came as he maneuvered up the left side, recognizing limited support. “I figured I would try to get to the middle and rip a shot — see what happens — and it went in,” he stated after the game. His goal broke a 2-2 tie and set the stage for teammate Kole Lendzyk to seal the win with an empty-net goal.
The Lumberjacks challenged Hermantown throughout the match, outshooting them 13-5 in the first period. Hermantown goalie Bryce Francisco stood tall with 28 saves, displaying exceptional skill. “Bryce was up to the task,” said coach Pat Andrews. “We don’t win that game — obviously — without Bryce.” His performance included both routine saves and spectacular stops that kept the score close.
After Swenson’s game-changing goal, the teams continued to battle, but CEC’s efforts were thwarted by Hermantown’s strong defense and Francisco’s resilience in goal. CEC coach Shea Walters acknowledged their effort, stating, “We started a little flat in the second period, but then again — we had a great response.”
CEC also showcased their defensive prowess with a perfect penalty kill, having given up just one goal all season. “Tonight was no different, and it is a momentum builder for us,” Walters added.
With the victory, Hermantown maintains its position as the top-ranked team in Class A as they head into a short Christmas break. They will face Delano, currently ranked No. 3 in Class A, at 3 p.m. on Friday. “It’s crazy to think that we haven’t lost yet,” Francisco remarked. “We’re having a great year, but our coaches stress taking it one game at a time.”
Fans and supporters eagerly await the upcoming match against Delano, with high hopes for Hermantown’s continued success. Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses!
