Greenville High Hosts Heartwarming Holiday Dinner for Students

UPDATE: Greenville High School students were treated to a heartwarming holiday dinner on December 9, offering a festive meal that many might otherwise miss. The annual event, organized by the school district’s food and nutrition department, served approximately 1,100 students, ensuring that every student had the opportunity to enjoy a traditional holiday feast.

The menu featured classic dishes such as mashed potatoes, glazed maple carrots, and freshly roasted ham. This tradition is especially significant for students from lower-income families or international exchange students unfamiliar with American holiday meals. Food and Nutrition Director Dan Kuk emphasized the importance of this event, stating, “It gives us an opportunity to continue to serve our students… Not all of them get to participate in this type of meal.”

This year’s holiday dinner was provided at no cost to students, thanks to the support of the school district. Kuk added, “It’s a little bit of an added expense, but the school district helps out with that.” The event not only nourished students but also fostered a sense of community and celebration.

DECA students played a vital role in enhancing the festive atmosphere. Emily Fox, an 18-year-old senior and DECA vice president of public relations, highlighted the organization’s commitment to contributing positively to the event. “We’ve had a lot of volunteers putting everything up, making sure everything is clean… We also put out placemats in advance,” she explained. DECA members also served delightful desserts, including homemade apple crumble and cherry turnovers topped with whipped cream, further enriching the dining experience.

Adding to the holiday spirit, Claude Johnson, a GHS employee and Greenville City Councilman, donned the festive persona of “Santa Claude,” alongside a character resembling “The Grinch.” Sophomores Gabby Pelak and Kendal Taylor expressed their delight, with Taylor stating, “It’s really nice and it makes me feel festive.” Pelak noted, “The meal was good. I had the ham and mashed potatoes and carrots, and it was really good.”

As students enjoyed their meals, the event not only provided nourishment but also fostered joy and a sense of belonging within the school community. Kuk praised his staff for their dedication, saying, “I am so grateful for my staff and the extra effort they put into meals like this. They really go above and beyond.”

The holiday dinner at Greenville High School exemplifies the spirit of giving and community, ensuring that every student feels included and cherished during this festive season. As the school continues to support its students through free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs, this special event stands out as a highlight, creating cherished memories for all involved.

With the success of this year’s dinner, attention now turns to future events that will continue to bring joy and unity to the student body.
