This year, Parker Johnson stood out by winning the costume contest dressed as the Very Hungry Caterpillar. “I was brainstorming ideas with my family, and my dad suggested a caterpillar eating its way out of the pumpkin. It was a fun concept, so I went with it,” Johnson shared.
The regatta, now in its 21st year, challenges participants not only to race to the finish line but also to avoid taking on too much water in their oversized vessels. Each paddler receives a giant pumpkin, which is already hollowed out, along with a paddle and a life vest—ensuring safety while they paddle for fun.
The event is organized with support from the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers, who supply the pumpkins. Participants are chosen by lottery, adding an element of luck to the festivities. All paddlers must be at least 18 years old, and family-friendly costumes are a requirement, fostering a sense of community and celebration among attendees.
The regatta not only provides entertainment but also promotes a sense of joy and camaraderie, drawing crowds eager to witness the unique spectacle.
