Giant Company to Close 5 Fulfillment Centers in PA by Q1 2026

UPDATE: The Giant Company is set to close five fulfillment centers across Pennsylvania, a decision that will impact the grocery landscape in the state. This urgent announcement affects facilities in Lancaster, Philadelphia, Willow Grove, Coopersburg, and North Coventry, with most closures expected by the end of the first quarter in 2026.

Officials revealed that the Lancaster fulfillment center located at 235 N. Reservoir St. will cease operations, and the transition to store-based fulfillment is anticipated to be completed by April 2026. The decision was made to adapt to changing consumer expectations for faster grocery delivery.

“We’ve learned over the past few years that there isn’t a one size fits all approach to our e-commerce business,” said a company spokesperson. They emphasized the shift towards efficiency in fulfilling online orders, stating that “after careful review, the decision was made to transition fully to store-based fulfillment and discontinue centralized fulfillment.”

This transition means that Giant Direct orders will now be picked by store team members—referred to as “Grocery Getters”—and delivered by third-party providers such as Instacart and DoorDash, rather than Giant Direct drivers. The company plans to support employees affected by the closures, with alternative positions available within the organization.

The 38,000-square-foot Lancaster facility, which opened in 2019 and employed 81 people, previously operated as a Giant grocery store for 37 years before its closure in 2017. This closure will also result in layoffs of 128 employees at the Philadelphia fulfillment center at 3501 Island Ave., as confirmed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry.

As grocery delivery continues to evolve, customers will notice changes in how their groceries are delivered, with store-based fulfillment expected to enhance service speed and reliability. The Giant Company, a subsidiary of Ahold Delhaize USA, is currently assessing the impact of these changes and is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for both employees and customers.

Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops, and prepare for significant shifts in your grocery delivery experience in the upcoming months.
