UPDATE: Gastonia is making strides towards sustainable transportation with a groundbreaking partnership with Peel Scooters, announced just moments ago. The Gastonia City Council has officially approved an electric scooter pilot program that will launch on November 19, 2024, transforming the city’s transit landscape.
This innovative program introduces up to 25 electric scooters available for rent along key routes such as Franklin Boulevard and through the vibrant Loray Mill and FUSE Districts. The initiative, which carries no cost for the city, will operate for one year with the potential for extension, promising a significant boost to eco-friendly transit options.
Peel Scooters will compensate the city five cents per ride, following the previous pilot program with Bird Rides, Inc., which concluded in 2023. The new scooters will provide residents and visitors a quick and fun way to access popular destinations within Gastonia, including CaroMont Health Park and the downtown area.
“We are excited to bring Peel Scooters to Gastonia,” said Quentin McPhatter, Assistant City Manager. “This program offers a convenient way to get around while promoting safe, multi-modal transportation.”
To ride, users can unlock a scooter for just $1.00, with each minute costing $0.40. However, safety is a top priority; city ordinances restrict scooter usage on sidewalks, trails, and in specific public areas like Eastridge Mall. Riders are urged to follow safety guidelines, including conducting pre-ride checks, wearing helmets, and avoiding alcohol before riding.
Gastonia officials stress the importance of responsible usage. “We strongly recommend that riders adhere to safety measures and be aware of traffic flow,” McPhatter added.
As the program gears up for launch, residents are encouraged to prepare for this new mode of transport. For inquiries about the scooters, potential riders can contact Alex Zimmerman via email or call 704-794-2289. Questions regarding the pilot program can be directed to McPhatter at 704-866-6013 or through the Peel Scooter Pilot Program webpage.
Stay tuned for more updates as Gastonia embraces this eco-friendly initiative, paving the way for a greener future in urban transit!
