Freshman Goalie Rousseau Shines in 3-0 Shutout for UMaine

UPDATE: In a stunning comeback, University of Maine freshman goalie Mathis Rousseau made a remarkable impact in his first start in 21 days, delivering a flawless performance with 21 saves in a 3-0 victory over Boston College earlier today.

After a disappointing loss on Friday night, where starting goalie Albin Boija allowed six goals in a 7-3 defeat, the pressure was on Rousseau to rise to the occasion. He did not disappoint, securing the shutout and demonstrating his skills after a lengthy absence from the ice.

“It went pretty well. They’re obviously a good team and everybody was pretty pumped up to get back at them today after yesterday’s game,” Rousseau stated after the match. His confidence was palpable as he discussed his effective rebound control and ability to manage the puck. “I didn’t give them second chances very often today,” he added.

Rousseau, a native of Boisbriand, Quebec, previously showcased his talent by starting five games for Team Canada in the 2023-24 World Junior Championships, where he recorded the tournament’s third-best goals-against average of 2.00 and a save percentage of .912. He played for Moncton and Halifax in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League last season.

UMaine head coach Ben Barr praised Rousseau’s performance, noting, “We gave up some Grade-A chances but he made some saves all night and kept us ahead.” Barr highlighted a significant improvement in the team’s defensive efforts compared to the previous night, stating, “The guys blocked more shots and did more of the little things tonight than we did last night.”

Freshman right wing Miguel Marques also had a standout performance, scoring two goals that contributed significantly to the team’s success. “He is pretty opportunistic. He has a good offensive mind,” Barr remarked, acknowledging Marques’ crucial role in the victory.

This decisive win not only boosts morale for the team but also positions Rousseau as a promising asset moving forward. Fans and teammates alike are optimistic about the momentum this victory brings as they look ahead to their next match.

As UMaine celebrates this impressive performance, all eyes will be on Rousseau and the team as they prepare to continue their season. Stay tuned for further updates as they strive for success in the upcoming games.
