Franklin G. Schappell, 91, Passes Away; Funeral Services Scheduled

BREAKING: Franklin G. Schappell, a beloved member of the Perry Township community, has passed away at the age of 91. He died on December 19, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of family, faith, and service.

Schappell, who was the husband of the late Ruth G. (Reppert) Schappell, who died on July 31, 2019, was a dedicated family man and veteran of the U.S. Army. Born in Perry Township, he was the son of the late James and Edna (Sunday) Schappell, and a graduate of Perry High School in 1952. His commitment to his community was evident through his long-term involvement with Zion’s Church and his work maintaining Zion’s Cemetery.

Schappell enjoyed a fulfilling career at Berks Packing, where he operated a chopper and contributed to the making of famous Berks Hot Dogs until his retirement in 1996. Outside of work, he was passionate about hunting, farming, gardening, and sports. His devotion to his faith was marked by his regular reading of the Bible.

Franklin Schappell is survived by three sons: Rodney F. Schappell of Cumru Township, Dennis J. Schappell (husband of Lisa (Simmons)) from Centre Township, and Gregory C. Schappell (husband of Tulsa (Hosmer)) of Shoemakersville. He is also survived by three daughters: Denise E. Schappell of Perry Township, Brenda R. (Schappell) Zellers of Hamburg, and Patti E. (Schappell) Cahill (wife of Dale Cahill) from Geneva, Ohio. Franklin leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, along with a niece and a nephew.

Schappell was predeceased by his twin daughters, Lori L. and Dori A. Schappell, a sister, Dorothy (Schappell) Bankes, and a niece.

Funeral services are set to take place on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM from Zion’s Church, located at 770 Zion Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. A viewing will precede the service from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Following the service, burial will occur at Zion’s Cemetery in Perry Township.
