Fargo Officials Urge Residents: Avoid Illegal Snow Dumping Now!

UPDATE: Fargo officials are urgently reminding residents to refrain from illegal snow dumping as winter storms approach the area. With forecasts predicting significant snowfall later this week, homeowners are warned that moving snow onto public roadways can lead to hefty fines and unsafe conditions.

Authorities emphasize that it is illegal in North Dakota to push snow into rights-of-way. In Fargo, violators can face fines of up to $500. “If it’s not clear, that’s going to lead to those issues,” stated Barry Kinnischtzke, operations section team leader at the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

Officials are concerned about the increasing risk of collisions and road damage caused by snow dumped improperly. “If we have a long winter, that can definitely lead to more issues on those rural roadways,” Kinnischtzke added, highlighting the critical nature of this reminder.

As winter progresses, large snow piles can obstruct sight lines at intersections and impede emergency responders. Kinnischtzke noted, “We’re just trying to do what’s best for the traveling public and keep our roadways safe.” This sentiment is echoed by Ben Dow, Fargo’s Public Works director, who urges homeowners to avoid piling snow at the end of driveways.

Walsh County officials also warn that homeowners may be financially liable if their snow piles contribute to accidents. “Emergency responders can be slowed by snow dumped near ditches, creating hazardous situations for everyone,” Kinnischtzke warned.

With more snow anticipated soon, authorities are emphasizing the importance of compliance to ensure public safety. Residents are advised to manage snow responsibly to avoid fines and create safer road conditions. “If we have additional piles out there, that’s just gonna prevent us from getting out there sooner and just create more of an issue when winds do pick up,” Kinnischtzke stated.

Stay tuned for more updates as this situation develops. It is crucial for all residents to act promptly to keep Fargo’s roads safe this winter.
