El Monte Officer Jesus Rojas Wins Prestigious Community Policing Award

UPDATE: El Monte Police Officer Jesus Rojas has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Centurion Award for Excellence in Community Policing, marking a historic achievement for the El Monte Police Department. This recognition, presented by the Peace Officers Association of Los Angeles County (POALAC), took place during a ceremony at the University of California on October 27, 2025.

This award is particularly significant as it is the first time in 96 years that an officer from the El Monte Police Department has received this honor, highlighting the department’s commitment to community engagement. “Rojas is completely dedicated to his job,” said Chief Jake Fisher of the El Monte Police Department. “He has been instrumental in enhancing relationships with schools, businesses, and residents, driving our community mission forward.”

Rojas’ proactive and compassionate approach to policing has made a profound impact on the El Monte community. According to POALAC officials, his efforts have built public trust and fostered a culture of cooperation and compassion. The award reflects not only his role as a public servant but also his commitment as a community friend.

“His presence, willingness to engage the community, and inclusive approach has contributed to building public trust,” association officials stated in their announcement. Rojas has been at the forefront of numerous outreach programs, including the Christmas Holiday Toy Giveaway, Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway, and National Night Out, which have successfully united families, youth, and law enforcement.

In addition to Rojas’ recognition, the El Monte Police Department celebrated another achievement at the Centurion Awards, honoring volunteer Jane Ellis for her 18 years of service in the city’s Volunteers Caring and Patrolling Program (VCAP).

Rojas has been recognized for his exceptional ability to connect with the community in a sincere and respectful manner. Jessie Redd, managing director for public safety initiatives at the USC Price Center, remarked, “Officer Rojas deserves recognition because he leads with compassion and shows what community-centered policing should look like.”

As the El Monte community continues to witness the positive effects of Rojas’ initiatives, the police department emphasizes the importance of building trust and supporting families. The recognition of both Rojas and Ellis serves as a reminder of the vital role community engagement plays in public safety.

The Monrovia Police Department also earned accolades, receiving the Excellence in Community Policing (Team) award for its Community Activists Policing Bureau, underscoring a broader commitment to community-oriented law enforcement across the region.
