URGENT UPDATE: St. Scholastica’s women’s hockey team faced a tough defeat today, falling 3-1 to Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a nonconference matchup. The game, held at Wisconsin-Eau Claire, saw a late surge from the Saints, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Blugolds’ dominant performance.
With just 1:57 left in the game, Saints forward Lyndi Schubert scored, narrowing the score to 2-1. However, a late empty-net goal from UWEC sealed the match. The Saints were outshot dramatically, facing a staggering 43 shots compared to their own 17, highlighting their struggles on the ice.
Goalie Makenzie Cole put forth a commendable effort, making 40 saves during the game, but the Saints, now with a record of 3-5-1, will need to regroup quickly. They are set to return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a critical home-and-home series against Hamline starting this upcoming Friday in Duluth.
In men’s hockey, St. Scholastica also faced disappointment at the Superior Showdown over the weekend. The team was unable to secure a victory, suffering a 5-0 loss to Lawrence on Friday and a 5-2 defeat against hosts Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday.
The Saints struggled offensively, with Lawrence goalie Owen Carlson shutting them out on 26 shots during their first game. On Saturday, CSS managed to fight back from a 2-0 deficit thanks to goals from Evan Pahos and Luke McCarthy, but ultimately conceded three unanswered goals, sealing their fate in the third-place game.
Next up, the men’s team will also face Hamline this Friday, marking their last series of the calendar year 2025. Both teams are looking to turn their fortunes around as the season progresses.
Stay tuned for more updates as the CSS teams aim to bounce back in their upcoming matches.
