UPDATE: The Corning City Council is set to meet today at 5:30 p.m. at 794 Third St. to urgently reconsider the controversial closure of West Street for construction related to West Street Elementary School. This meeting is open to the public, with an opportunity for community members to voice their opinions.
The council previously addressed this issue in November 2025, where they opted against a lengthy closure of West Street, instead encouraging the school district to utilize its own property for construction staging. However, new developments have prompted a reevaluation. The revised proposal now suggests limiting the closure to the summer construction period, from June 5 to August 14, with daily reopening at 5:00 p.m. and overnight access maintained until 6:00 a.m. the following day.
City staff have indicated that this updated plan significantly reduces disruptions for local residents, addressing concerns raised during the previous meeting. The staff report recommends approval of these temporary daytime closures to facilitate essential construction work.
Additionally, the council will host a public workshop later in the agenda to discuss amendments to the Corning municipal code. This amendment aims to tackle ongoing nuisance conditions affecting neighborhood quality and public health. City staff will present a draft nuisance abatement ordinance that clarifies definitions and standardizes enforcement processes, aligning with regulations in nearby Red Bluff, Orland, and Tehama County.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the workshop, providing feedback and asking questions about the proposed changes. While no formal action will be taken today, the council may direct staff based on community input.
This meeting is pivotal for both the local community and the school district, as it addresses critical infrastructure needs while balancing public concerns. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
