URGENT UPDATE: The Kenosha community is in mourning following a tragic apartment fire that claimed the lives of three young siblings—Rylee, Alena, and Connor Kannin—on Thanksgiving night. Friends and family gathered to honor the children, creating a heartfelt memorial filled with stuffed animals, flowers, and candles outside the site of the fire.
Dozens of grieving community members attended the vigil, sharing hugs, tears, and cherished memories as they struggled to cope with the devastating loss. “They were taken too soon from us, and this was not supposed to happen to anybody,” said Chelsea Meeks, a family friend and vigil organizer. “No parent is supposed to still be alive when their child is not on this earth, and I strongly believe that.”
The vigil was a poignant reminder of the close bond shared by the siblings. Community member Gregory Rawls recalled, “I called them the three amigos in my brain. Whenever you saw one, you knew the other two; they can’t be that far apart.”
As investigations continue nearly a week after the fire, both the Kenosha police and fire departments are exploring all possibilities, including a “criminal investigative lens.” However, authorities have confirmed that there is currently no evidence of criminal activity related to the incident.
Questions linger about the circumstances surrounding the fire. “What really happened, how did it happen, how did it start, what happened after that, that’s the main thing that’s going through my head,” Rawls expressed. The community is seeking answers, grappling with the shocking reality of the tragedy.
During the memorial, attendees placed the children’s favorite toys around the growing tribute and sang songs in their memory, reflecting the love and impact the siblings had on those around them. “I hope that they are at peace and know that they were loved by more than just their family; they were loved by friends, teachers, just anybody who came in contact with them,” Meeks added.
The children’s funeral is scheduled for later this week, providing another opportunity for the community to come together in remembrance. As the investigation unfolds, the community remains united in grief and seeks to honor the memory of Rylee, Alena, and Connor Kannin.
