Chester Unveils Statue of Kickboxing Legend Fredia Gibbs

UPDATE: Chester, Pennsylvania, has honored local hero Fredia “The Cheetah” Gibbs with a statue unveiled on November 6, 2023. This landmark moment celebrates Gibbs as the first African American woman to win a world kickboxing title, marking a significant achievement in sports history.

The statue now stands proudly in the park across from Chester City Hall at East Fourth Street and Avenue of the States. Mayor Stefan Roots proclaimed, “Her story is the story of Chester itself, a story of grit, perseverance, and pride.” He emphasized that Gibbs represents hope and inspiration for everyone who encounters the monument.

Gibbs, often referred to as “The Most Dangerous Woman in the World,” has a remarkable career spanning over three decades, winning titles from ISKA, WKA, and WCK. Mayor Roots noted her enduring legacy, stating, “Greatness grows in Chester,” as the city continues to take pride in her achievements.

“This statue doesn’t just represent me, it represents us, it represents Chester, the heart, the fight, the resilience,” Gibbs stated during the emotional unveiling ceremony.

The statue was originally unveiled at Cabrini University in 2022, where Gibbs was an All-American and the all-time leading basketball point scorer. Following the university’s closure, Villanova University acquired the statue and generously gifted it to the city of Chester.

“Wow, what a moment,” Gibbs expressed, visibly moved. “To stand here today, back here where it all began, it means everything to me.” She credited the city for instilling the strength that helped her achieve her dreams, saying, “Chester is my story … . Thank you Chester, I love you.”

Created by sculptor Jennifer Frudakis-Petry and cast by Laran Bronze, the statue serves as a beacon of hope for the community, reminding residents that no goal is too ambitious to achieve.

This unveiling not only celebrates an athletic achievement but also reinforces the values of resilience and community spirit that define Chester. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to visit the statue, which stands as a testament to the legacy of Fredia Gibbs and the unwavering support of her hometown.

As Chester embraces this momentous occasion, the city looks forward to inspiring future generations through Gibbs’ story. The statue is more than an artistic tribute; it is a symbol of what can be accomplished with passion, perseverance, and a community that believes.
